(Terry Peters photo) ‘Would remove ‘human factor’ By NOEL WRIGHT West Vancouver Mayor Derrick Hum- phreys has blasted a proposal for a metro- politan police force to serve the Greater Van- couver area because it would remove “the human factor” from policing in West Van. The proposal for a metropolitan’ force was made last week by Mayor Muni Evers of New West- minster which, like West Vancouver and 10 = other B.C. municipalities, runs its own police department. “I'm completely opposed to the concept,” Mayor Humphreys told The News. “It would presume to be a police force operated under the Greater Vancouver Regional District and add further to the controls of the GVRD, many of which are replacing local autonomy.” Humphreys, who is chairman of the West Vancouver police com- mission, rejected the suggestion that a metropolitan force would make for greater efficiency. “With the technology, liaison and communication that cxists between the vanous police forces right up to the Coordinated Law Enforcement Unit,” he said. “the public may be assured that policing is both efficient CONTINUED ON PAGE A2 oA North: Vancouver closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. in two weeks if a bylaw proposed: by ‘District council Monday night is adopted.
