Coyotes decimated
in parts of Alberta

EDMONTON (UPC) - The
lonely how! of coyotes
baying at the Prairie moon 1s
fast becoming just another
memory of the West in some
parts of Alberta.

Arlen Todd, a_ biologist
with the provincial wildlife
department, says coyote
populations in the grasslands
of southeast Alberta - where
there is no topographic or
bush cover for the animals -
have decreased by about 80
per cent since 1977

“There's no doubt in my
muind it's due to the high pelt
prices,” Todd said.

As fur markets turned
towards long-haired pelts.
pnices for coyote hides have
escalated from the $5 to $20
range to the $100 to $200

range, Bug Miller. deputy
minister of wildlife, said.

With the high prices,
hunters, who previously
faced no restnctions on
coyotes, have stepped up
kills from 20,000 animals in
the 1974-75 season to over
45,000 last year, Todd said in
an interview Monday. _

So, the province has
decided to all but end
hunting the animal for sport

Starting this year. hunters
wul be restncted to taking
two coyotes a season and
wil no longer be able to use
dogs in the hunts.

The restnctions do not
include land owned or leased
by ranchers where coyotes
remain a problem = for
livestock
