By BARBARA McCREADIE My next flight scared the discount a few years when _ we chugged across Canada a couple of times in pursuit of my dad. He seemed to be indispensable at that time to the Canadian Air- Force! Mom considered him §in- dispensable to US, so we “packed and followed”? Someone finally put the skids to the Third Reich and other zelated enterprises and .my Nova Scotian parents decided that Alberta was a - good place to live. The first time we took a holiday was six years later — when we piled in our newly- acquired car and headed ' over gravel roads to Havre, Montana. I was so excited over the prospect that I promptly unloaded my breakfast all over the back seat. Some start for a travel columnist! I used to sit near the train tracks (CPR Mainline), and imagine myself in a sleeper car heading for the great unknown. Some kids dream of fairy tales or horses. My dreams were all travel. At-last, my first flight. It came, courtesy of a union dispute on the CPR! New Year’s, 1957, found a lot of UBC students stranded in Alberta with no tran- sportation back to Van- couver. Some, probably afraid of taking TRANS- CANADA AIRLINES (!), opted for driving, but my Dad figured that the plane was a whole lot better. | couldn't have cared less as long as I got back in time for classes. The DC-3 that took us out of Medicine Hat for Calgary landed on time, and struggled my- way up the incline. Those beasts sit at about 30 degrees up, from nose to tail! Reassured by the presence of the stewardess (who HAD to be a registered nurse!) I figured I'd be in good hands if my stomach decided to part company with my dignity. With great luck, and a lot of firm swallows, I heJd onto my breakfast. My."" cars...were- another t' ing. The North Star that te ok us from Calgary to ‘% ancouver did a good job on tem, too. Since nobody told r 2 any different, I assumed t at all planes bounced like y'yo’s and roared like the start of a war. They handed us boxes of packed lunch and you proved that you were in control by cating the whole thing. t Aside from being deaf for_ three days afterwards, my {rst flight was something I'l! rever forget. Oddly, 1] wasn’t a that scared — perhaps because all 17-ycar-olds consider themselves im- niortal. hell out of Mom and Dad! My. moderate+sized suitcase “wouldn’t fit in the hole behind the’ seat so Dad shipped it behind me by Greyhound. It.arrived about the same time we did! Naturally, that was the day of the tornado in Alberta. High winds wiped out all the power lines for’ hundreds of - miles but, luckily, didn’t cause our plane any problems. Ever had to field a—- pass at a few thousand feet? The only problem I had was discouraging the advances of my friend’s brother who figured, rightly, that the escape route wasn’t feasible. I figured that he wasn’t feasible either! By the time we reached Edmonton the situation was solved — I promised him a heart-to-heart talk with my Dad and he promised to give up sex forever. I took the train home. Planes changed. The _ Viscounts and North Stars gave way to jets. The two- hour flight between Calgary and Vancouver became an hour and ten minutes. In- stead of “coffee tea or me”, it became “Weuld-you care for a drink from the bar?” My first flight consisted of fifteen men and me. Women, except for those brave registered nurses, waved goodbye at the air- port and went home to check-up on their husbands’ life insurance. Today, you can bet that at least half of the seats are feminine oc- cupied with a lot of husbands waving goodbye at the airport. Today, my _ kids hop aboard a flight to London, Hawaii or Rio with “cool”. They cope with international borders with such con- fidence! (‘Mom, I'll grab the ‘duty-free’ if you handle the - spassports”). When I-took my eight-year-old, on 4a, flight” from Vancouver to Rid, I remembered my own ex- pericnces on the way to ‘Montana and showed her the “Barf Bag”.
