The 24-year-old Delta man told a judge on Sept. 30 that his four friends had died in a sin- gle car crash in Richmond the previous week. The dead men, age 19 to 24, were killed in a speeding Ford Mustang when it hit a fence and trec on River Road in Richmond. Parhar was recently in West Vancouver provincial court in connection with a single-car crash that occurred on the Lions Gate Bridge on July 10. Parhar totalled a company car valued at more than $14,000. He lost his job of 24 years as a result, Parhar worked as a supervisor for a security guard company. “Pm just really glad it was just myself involved,” said Parhar about the crash. He pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention. Crown lawyer Dan Mulligan described the situation as a “borderline impaired driving alle- gation.”. ; eo, “Parhar had been reported to the North Vancouver RCMP. He was observed in a secu- dity guard-uniform slumped over the wheel of a car and asleep on the Trans-Canada Highway near Capilano Road. The time was 3:20 a.m. . The car was facing the wrong direction, He had catapulted over an airbag and hit the wind- shield. A West Vancouver Police officer at the scene asked him ifhe felt dizzy, “No, just drunk,” was Parhar’s reply. Parhar was taken to Lions Gate Hospital where he was described as being “abusive and aggressive.” Police believe he was speeding when he hit the median. Two hours after the incident he blew .09 and .08 for alcohol content in his blood. Parhar’s lawyer, Deborah Harden, said her client had consumed three beers prior to being called into work unexpectedly. When asked by the judge, Parhar himself said he had more than three beers. The Crown prosecutor said Parhar has an “unenviable” motor vehicle record. Recent tickets were issued for excessive speeding and speeding. Parhar’s licence was lifted for three months earlier this year for driving infractions. Said Parhar’s lawyer, “He is just a boy who grew up loving cars.” Replied Judge Grandison, “Sounds like he loved speeding.” Harden explained that Parhar had been called into work on the night of the crash and also on the two preceding evenings. He was sick with a cold and had not slept in three days, said the defence lawyer. - Parhar had conducted a security check at Westview Shopping Centre before pulling off the road to rest.
