26 - Wednesday, October 19, 1988 - North Shore News soccer Blues keep in top spot A 1-1 TIE with BCIT over the weekend spelled the first geal against the Capilzao College Blues men’s soccer squad, but the draw still means the locals remain in first place based on goal averages. Going ahead on a penalty shot by Eamonn Ward in the first half, the Blues enjoyed a short-lived lead. “In the second half BCIT played very, very physical,’ said coach Joe lacobellis. ‘They made it dif- ficult for us to score — it was a struggle.” An error on a Capilano goal kick gave BCIT the needed break, and there was no hesitation in scoring. Though both teams have J1 points, Capilano remains in first place, having the better goal average; BCIT is second, followed by Malaspina College. In play two days earlier, a shutout from Brad Baker and fine play from the back five helped the Blues to a 3-0 victory over Trinity Western University. Ward put in a penalty shot in the first half, and was bolstered with second-half goals by Jason Bermudez on a cross from Randy Celebrini, and a solo effort from Pedro Bello. In earlier action, the Blues took on the Richmond’s premier divi- sion team Club Ireland, winning in a 3-1 contest. “I was quite pleased with the result,’”? said lacobellis. ‘‘Our players are 18-year-olds and they’re a senior men’s team.”’ League play against the VCC Falcons saw goalkeeper Karim Te- jami record another shutout as the Capilano squad played to a 3-0 win. Assisted by Adrian Collery, Rob Reed and Blair Scobbie scored in the first half; Rod Schenoni con- nected from Brad Trach for a second-half goal. Fishing secrets revealed ALWAYS BEEN envious of fish- ermen who catch salmon seemingly without effort? Now, those same tips and tech- niques are available to all in a River Salmon Fishing course being offered at the Karen Magnussen Recreation Centre. Veteran fisherman Don McDonald will give students the benefit of his 25 years’ experience in telling them what to look for when fishing a river, how to tie basic knots, how to clean and prepare fish and where to get the best prices. McDonald’s biggest claim to fishing fame is catching a 55-inch salmon, and he has fished virtually every river from the Lower Mainland to California. The course includes two in-class sessions Oct. 24 and 31 and two days of river fishing. Participants must supply their own equipment, including hip waders.
