ICBC has announced the sec-
ond phase of a new premium
scale starting Jan. 1.

And it’s a case of good news and bad.
No claims-tree customer will pay higher
premiums with the new scale, but new
and less experienced drivers will receive
discounts more gradually.

For each year of sate driving, new
drivers will earn five per cent discounts
in cach of their first cight years driving,
instead of the present system of 10 per
cent a year for four years.

The Claim Rated Seale is used by
ICBC to set the discount and surcharge
levels to determine premiums for cus-
tomers. The first phase of the new scale
came into effect Sept. 1, 2000.

At that time RoadStar and Roadstar
Gold - customers began receiving
increased discounts on their optional
coverage for cach year of safe driving up
to a maximum 53 per cent on Sept. 1,
rising to 56 per cent withia nwo months.

Long term safe drivers who have
their first at-fault claim will return to
their previous discount level in fewer
years. RoadStars will return to their pre-
vious discount level in three years rather

ICRC says the combined changes to
the Claim Rated Scale mean that almost
all drivers in B.C. wil pay less for their
auto insurance over a literime of driving.

The impact on current: drivers not
yet at the 40 per cene discount could
range from $35 spread over two
renewals, to $946 spread over six
renewals,

“Over time, the seale had become
unbalanced. The new scale provides a
fhirer system with incentives linked to
sate driving behaviour, and is another
example of the move towards drier-
based insurance,” said ICBC president
Thom Thompson.
