Two of these, Delbrook and William Griffin Recreation Cen- tres, are the heartbeat of the Capilano area, with numerous programs for tiny tots and seniors to artistic and special programs for the handicapped. Delbrook Recreation Centre, located at 600 West Queens Road, is presently the head office for the North Vancouver Recreation Commission. The centre was built in 1957 and operated as a high school until 1977 when it was destroyed by a fire. The community centre, open- ed in 1983, has three raquetball courts, one squash court. three tennis courts, and a gymnasium, the home of the Capilano College Blues basketball teams. The north building houses a number of rooms where a variety of courses are taught: watercolor painting, arts and crafts, guitar, gardening classes, preschool and senior activities, and cooking courses for all ages. With summer coming up, the most popular site will be the tennis courts. Says recreation coordinator Doug Worber: ‘‘They (tennis courts) are among the nicest on the North Shore. They’re well-finish- ed, clean and well-lit.’ The courts stay lit until 10 p.m. Tennis lessons are offered to players of all ages. Another big attraction, a pottery studio, is available for beginners or advanced potters. During summer vacation, pro- grams for children are available at Delbrook and at William Griffin to help working parents. Games, field trips, arts and crafts and swimming are among some of the activities available. Swimming and swimming lessons for all levels are available at William Griffin Recreation Cen- tre. The centre itself opened in 1975 with the opening of a 37-metre pool.
