Recent fish-killing incidents in West Vancouver streams tell us sorne- thing: too many people remain obliv- ious to the implications of their actions around streams. Our natural Waterways are not free-running extensions of the sewer system. ‘West Vancouver is a flash point on this front right now due in part to the fact. that. streams throughout the community. were stocked with coho . fry this spring by local stream keep- ‘ers. About nine of the streams haven’t —VIEW POINT Fisheries and Oceans Canada. It’s something new for a lot of folks. Education and awareness are key for the program to make a differ- ence to salmon stocks in this part of the province. North Vancouver City’s recent effort to restore a once buried portion of Thain Creck is a good example of rehabilitation and public education on the issue. Yet the pressures on fish remain in North Vancouver. A year’s worth of coho went down the drain on April 5 after someone tampered with the water supply to a salmon hatchery near Lynn Creck.
