The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of United Parcel Services Canada, pre- sented a $36,000 cheque to Capilano Community Services _ Society (CCSS) on Nov. 23. Established | in 1976, CCSS is the umbrella society for Seniozs’ Hub and. Capilano Youth Ovrreach Services. . Seniors’ Hub is a volun- teer-driven service, providing - volunteer. drivers, “tele- friends” and a monthly social - program for frail and isolated seniors. The service operates ‘out of the Delbrook _ recre- ‘ation centre’s North building. The grant money will be used to purchase a 12- to 14- ‘seat passenger bus that will provide long-term transporta- tion for seniors involved in the organization’s $ programs. ‘Margaret Fraser, executive director. of CCSS, . said the grant was one of the largest received by the organization. ~ The’ society receives oper- ating money frum ‘the North ~ Shore Health region and the : municipalities : of North Vancouver District and City. “Everything cise is donations from seniors’ families and foundations. But certainly, we have received nothing as big as this,” said Fraser. Seniors’ Hub serves approximately 600 seniors fiv- ing on the North Shore. The seniors, who are frail or isolated, depend on the ser- vice to keep them indepen- dent and living in their own homes, said Fraser. Clese to 300 volunteers, many of whom are seniors themsetves, help run the ser- vice. Volunteers support, the program as “telefriends,” pro- viding a friendly voice on the phone to homebound seniors. - They also act as volunteer dri- vers for seniors who are regis- tered in the program, provid- ing sides to medical appoint- ments.
