tial reading for history-lovers the
lead-off article will be of particular
interest to North Shore-centric types.

Against all odds the uio succeeded in build-
ing a submersible that met US. Navy require-
ments with 3 descent of 600 metres. They didn't

reach the upheard-of goal through a
series of scientific tests but in one fell
swoop while an American ship was
testing, a new generation of anti-sub-
marine torpedos in Jervis Inlet.
Neither crew decided against testing
that December day in 1966 and, of course in
the best Keystone Kops tradition, the navy shor
off an anti-sub raissile while the Pisees was mak-
ing its descent: “Far below, Thomson had been
recording his thoughts and observations on a
tape recorder. He had heard enough of the
squawking message from the Hudson Explorer
to realize his predicament. He shut down ali
unessential electrical gear. Pisces was now still

and silent. Thomson even clapped his hand over
his wrisowatch to murtle its ucking. He left the
tape recorder running, ard on the tape one can
distinciy hear the whine of the torpedo’s screws
as it cuts through the water secking a target —
exacdy as “femson heard it, crouched in the
sub, alone, 200 metres underwater, waiting, tor
any change ia tone to indicate the torpedo had
honed in on Pisces. Ever: though the torpedo
was unarmed, he knew it was a toss-up whether
it would impale Pisces or pass right through it.”

The company existed for 15 years, but never
became profitable and folded in 1979,
