Happy Holidays! i Lonsdale Quay Market's Guide Te Good Living rd we “es fper Joh Colt, Operations Manage for Lanse Quay Markt fds joy in daverig hag the Css Bereau Maline a Miracle hree years ago, Karinna Kondrateva and her family fled to Canada, escaping the war ravaged ftupublic of Georgia, in the former Soviet Union. They arrived in North Vancouver, close to Christmas, carrying just a few suitcases full of belongings. “We were very frightened,” says Karinna. “We didn’t know where to start to get help. We didn’t have much in Georgia, but everyday, if you don’t have some- thing, you don’t notice, but suddenly, when it is Christmas you feel so alone; aban- doned.” Then, Karinna heard about the North Shore Christmas Bureau, and one call changed her life. “A woman named Lee came to our place with toys and food and clothes. She was like Santa Claus. I cried, 1 couldn't help it. I told her - you are like a miracle to me.” Lee helped Karinna find a job with North Shore Family Services, and the family is now doing well. The Tree of Hope John Calcutt knows what it feels like to be on the giving side of the Christmas Bureau. As Operations Manager for Lonsdale Quay Market, he gathers and delivers hampers to those in need. “It’s a chance for me to give 100% to the true meaning of Christmas. When you deliver a hamper, the parents are so grateful. You look around and you know you've made a big differ- ence. Often they'll have tears in their eyes, and sometimes | get a big hug,” he smiles. John says this year, the Quay is hap- ing to adopt 25 North Shore fami- Nies, with the help of their cus- tomers, “We have a giant Christmas Tree of Hope, covered with red envelopes,” fie explains. “People can buy them for $25, $50, $75, or $100. Inside each envelope is a pro- file of the family they're helping.” John collects food, produce and gift items from generous Quay mer- chants, and then takes the donated money to buy additional food and staples. “We try to put together a hamper that will fast ten days,” he says. There are also Christmas Bureau bins located throughout the Quay so that the public can bring in. donations of food ar toys, All mar- ket personnel from the maintenance staff right up to the General Manager are involved in this huge project. Ic’s a lot of work, but for people like Karinna Kondrateva and her family, the effort of John and his team truly does change lives. “I am so grateful to the Christmas Bureau,” she reflects. “I wanted people to hear my story so that I could say...... chank- you.”
