By Margarst Third Contributing Writer MULTICULTURALISM is sometimes blamed for the erosion uf Canadian society and the Canadian way of life. It would seem that those who hold this view imagine this a. way of life as something static, as something that assumed its present form, based on some aspects of the Judaco- -Christian tradition, at a certain juncture and has remained in that form ever since. In reality the Canadian way of life has always been ina state of evolution. Canadian society has always been multicul- tural, if one uses the literal meaning of the word, composed of ‘many cultures. Tt was not individuals from one culture who entered Canada to find the native people already here with their rich and varied ways of life. Anyone with even a superficial knowledge of Canadian his- tory knows that the English and French were soon joined by Germans, Scandinavians, Jewish immigrants from more than one country, ftalians, East Europeans, the Lebanese and oth- ers from the Middle East, the Chinese, Japanese, and South Asians, as well as people usually described as black from the US., the Caribbean, and more recently, from Africa including Ethiopia, Eritrea and Somatia. Every new group of arrivals was viewed as somehow unde- sirable by the ones that had come earlier, seen as not being able to fit in or representing traditions incompatible with the Canadian way of life, until the new group became established ‘ . ‘and found its place in the Canadian mosaic. " baneciers : O38 ; OO pee: Knowing that this hag been the partern, we should be able a is ; to recognize that to be threatened by the current waves of \ a! ae immigration is to reflect a perception of insecurity rather than reality. * Most immigrants and refugees coming to Canada choose this country because of the Canadian way of life, with its tradi- tion-of tolerance and respect fur diversity, its compassion, the clative safety of its cities, its social safety net, its education yz and medical care, its opportunity, to name only a few aspects. Most value the work ethic, education and the institution of he family more than some “long-term” Canadians, Canada’s way of life is more at risk from those Canadians, ecent and long-term, who undervalue the sacial safery net nd may applaud cuts to welfare and medicare because in their youth and energy, or + :1blished wealth, they do not anced this assistance, and can. -t ocheve that others do. That this safety: ccs one of the main reasons that Canada 4 stable, law-abiding and peacefial country is not always fully derstaod, Mutticulturalism, as a respect for diversity and an inclusive and practical approach to providing services, is no threat to our Canadian way of life. a: Tris our Canadian way of life, and it is the way of life that aprovides necessary medical care for refugee claimants before athe decision is made to allow them to remain in Canada, that sees people as fellow human beings rather chan as aliens to fear and denigrate, “Margaret Third is the executive director of she North Shore a Multicultural Society.
