Bringing in that
compost harvest

THE Greater Vancouver Regional District (GVRD}) offers two
easy ways to harvest compost.

The no-fuss solution is to use a thick layer of coarse organ: :
ic material such as straw, leaves and prunings at the bottom of.
the bin. Add two layers at a time, such as kitchen and yard
waste. In 12 to.18 months, the material at the bottom and cen-
ire of the compost bin should be ready,

With a lithe more work, you can make compost in just six
months. Collect kitchen and yard waste. Chop up large, tough
materials using a flai edge spade. Mcisten materials if needed “1°
and add to the bin. Cover the bin with a solid lid. Dig into the
material:once a week, Moisten materials if dry. Mix in fresh
grass clippings if the pile is not decomposing.
