MANY people only asso- ciate bulbs with spring flowers. like the tulips that blossomed into a riot of color in past weeks. But summer-flowering bulbs can brighten a garden and accent shrubs and perenni- als right through the fall. The four traditional favorites among summer-flow- ering bulbs are dahlias, bego- nias, gladiolus and lilies. Few other garden plants provide as long a show as dahlias: blooming may begin Pianting successful summer bulbs SUMMER-FLOWERING bulbs produce their best blooms when planted in a sunny spot; however, lilies and begonias also bloom very well in partial shade. Plant summer bulbs in the spring when there is no tonger any dan- ger of ground frost, which should be no later than the end of May. Planting depths vary for summer bulbs. With dahlias, a bit of the old stalk should still stick out of the ground. Tuberous begonias have to be covered with one to two centimetres (three-quarter inch) of soil. Gladioli should be planted 7 to 10 cm (3-4 in.) deep and lilies at a your garden with bulbs as early as July and continue until frost. You can choose from an assortment of sizes. colors and shapes. Flower forms include cactus, ball, dec- orative, mignon, anemone- flowered, topmix, collerctte and pompom. There are low-growing dahlias that stand just 30 cm (12 in.) or less in height, as well as taller ones that easily reach the two-metre mark (6.5 ft.) and a host of in-between sizes. Begonias, too. come in a variety of shapes and colors. There are begonias that look like roses, carnations, camel- depth of at least 15 to 20 cm (6-8 in.). Like dahlias, glads like sun, heat and very litle wind. If you want fragrance with your glads, try the gladiolus’ cousin, Acidanthera_ bicolor. which hears sweet-smelling, creamy white flowers with a dark lilac heart. Lilies are an indis- pensable feature of the summer garden. They too come in an amuaz- ing palette of colors, forms and scents. Depending on the variety you have cho- sen, lilies can bloom from mid-spring through to late fall.
