B. C. College of Dental Surgeons under fire

MINUTES AFTER _ their
childhood North Vancouver
dentist was sentenced to four
years in jail, several of his
molested victims hugged each
other and sobbed softly.

anger equally at both Dr. Adi
Boman Irani and the College of
Dental Surgeons of B.C.

{ Over two dozen observers,
including many of the dentist’s
victims, crowded into a small
courtroom Thursday to hear B.C.
Supreme Court Mr. Justice Allan
Stewart describe Irani'’s sordid
dental career.

“Mr. Justice Stewart recounted
testimony of how Irani mixed pedi-
atric dentistry with pedophilia.

Most of his 22 alleged victims
' were. pre- to-early-teen girls; they
ranged i in age from five to 19.

‘The court heard how Irani par-
. tially sedated his patients with
nitrous oxide, known as laughing
gas, then fondied their breasts and
groin areas.

‘+ As reported in the Feb. 17
News, Irani was convicted of 1!
counts of indecent assault and one
count of sexual assault.

~*I-am glad he is going to jail
now — I-have been dealing with
this for 18 years,” one woman, now
24, told the News in an exclusive
interview. :

‘ She‘ was five years old’ when
_ Trani molested her in 1977.

. The woman, whose identity is
protected by a standard court
order, claims the College of Dental
- Surgeons let her and numerous
other patients down.

““They are totally to blame ... I
would never have been touched, ”

The father of one young patient
complained to the college in 1976,
But the college quickly dismissed
the complaint.

It was not until a second victim
went to the RCMP in 1992 that any
serious investigation was under-
taken.

Current college registrar Dr.
Roy Thordarson claims his prede-
cessor made no written notes or
report of the complaint, and made
no referral to the police of the col-
lege’s own lawyer, ;

“I was quite surprised.” Dr.
Thordarson told the News last fall.

Thordarson says the college
revamped its policy in about 1979,
and it now cooperates fully with

the potice.

“They (the college) should be
very shameful,” the woman told
the News.

A second victim agreed, “They
don’t protect the patients ... it’s an
old boys’ club," she claims. “He
wouldn't have touched all these
people if he had been stopped ear-
lier”

Mr. Justice Stewart underlined
the extent of Irani’s misconduct.

“He persistently and repeatedly
violated the trust imposed in him,”
the judge said. “Condemnation for
his acts must be at the forefront.”

The day after his sentencing,
Irani was released on $20.000 bail,
pending his appeal.
