1 rth Sho! L iFESTYLES New centre will welcome help from volunteers HOW TO say it? If tell you that Margaret Fulton Adult Day Care is splitting up, you'll start to cry. But it’s not that sort of split, like a divorce, it’s more like an amoeba — remember them from high school science ciass? Those or- ganisms that reproduced themselves painlessly, by simply splitting off a part and starting anew? That’s exactly what’s happening, very shortly. By the middle of November there will be a Margaret Fulton Centre in West Vancouver, in St. David’s Church, and there’s already a waiting list. Nothing will be lost in the establishment we. know here, in St. Andrews Church hall. It will still be open five days most weeks — holidays in- terfere occasionally — and will be offering even more . in the way of involvement and stimulation than it presently does. Some new programs have | . already been knitted into the days, and others are getting tryouts. This neighborly setup in West Vancouver is overdue and much welcomed, though in the first months it will operate only part of each week. The business of staffing and organizing and fur- nishing will make it part- time to start, but all plans are optimistic of full opera- tion in the future. | _. Some of the experienced staff from the present centre will help sraooth the begin- -nings at St. David’s, and it’s good news that Capilano College is now offering a course for Resident Care Attendants, There'll be lots of scope for their practicums. The new facility has a long list of needs, though. . There definitely is'a kitchen sink but not a lot besides. You see, the Ministry of Health undertakes funding for rent and staffing, but nothing at all for readying the space allotted at St. David’s. The rooms are at this moment quite empty, and I have a list here just short of THE VINTAGE YEARS piaces to try, of course, and those warehouse furnishings establishments and army surplus stores, . Be sure, nothing will escape scrutiny. ; But should you be moving or shedding, please bear in mind the various needs you might mitigate. One other very desirable concomitant — I might as well make this list complete in one fell swoop — is more volunteers, ; It’s fairly easy to get peo- ple to rummage around for seldom-used household ar- ticles; it’s something else to ask flat out for their bodies! . Volunteers, my dears, are worth their weight in gold, and there are areas needing all kinds of different skills. @ Cookery, for one — kitchen participation proved a great entertainer this past summer, and will continue to do so. @ Art — do you do NEWS photo Cindy Goodman watercolor maybe, or acrylic work, or sing along with your guitar? You'd be very welcome, @ Maybe you do card tricks, or juggle perhaps, or you’ve been around the world in a balloon and en- joy talking about it. You’d have a most ap- preciative audience with the foiks who visit Margaret Fulton. Some come several times a week, you see, and you can imagine how wel- come new faces and activi- ties are. I got a brand-new slant on volunteering the other day, by the way. I’d been visiting with Wendy Hanna who runs the Volunteers for Residents of Care Facilities LYNN VALLEY MEDICAL programs on the North Shore, and she really sur- prised me. I’m sure she knows what she’s talking about as she’s been in this work for many years, but she says that most volunteers offer themselves in order to improve their own lives, their own sense of well-being. I’ve always thought it was to spill some of your own good fortune on to people less fortunate. I mean, here you are with an abundance; it just scems the thing to do. But if she’s right, there’s a preat personal bonus to be earned, and if it can make you feel good — wow — time to get at it. ° Call 984-7900 D TRAVEL CLINIC 4102-1200 Lynn Valley Road (next to McDonalds) 988-5389 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM 7 DAYS A WEEK We are pleased to announce that we are now approved by Health and Welfare Canada as a TRAVEL CLINIC For all your pre and post travel requirements FLU SHOTS NOW AVAILABLE. | Are you 19 to 70 years old, with mild to | moderate asthma but otherwise in good i health?
