Indians win weekend games THE NORTH Shore In- dians are serving notice to their West Coast Senior B competition that this season belongs to them. By A.P. McCredie Sports Reporter Following a 7-4 season-opening victory against the Surrey Rebels last Wednesday night, the Indians’ home opener against Langley Knights on Friday did not disap- point the home-town fans. Physically, the Indians are by far the biggest — and by Friday night’s. account the toughest — team in the league. The Knights struck first when Paul Booth broke free in front of the Indians’ goal and beat Indians goalie Dennis Joseph. Three minutes later, Knight standout Gord Minct took a pass from Mike Davis and blasted a shot past Joseph. But it didn’t take long for the Indians to respond. : Mike Shaw scored on a straight-on shot from 15 metres (50 ft.) out, beating Knights net- minder Dave Pech, who. didn’t even see the ball until it was in the net, . The remainder of the 20-minute first period saw both teams trade goals, including two by the In- dians’ Brian Baker. The teams hit the locker room with the Indians ahead 5-4. The Knights came out swinging in the second, dominating the ball on defence and on offence with two quick goals. At the 13:08 mark of the second period, a melee erupted behind the Indians net, resulting in three players from each team cooling ‘their heels in the penalty box for two minutes. With both teams playing three-a-side, Martin capitalized with a close-in goal to knot the game at seven, The Indians made 4 goaltender GCERAR GAR KS CCR EEE SE) CO g 306 KENNARD AVE. f} NORTH VANCOUVER 980-8424 Les eae GSI ED change at the 11-minute mark. Veteran Indian Joseph was replaced by off-season acquisition Dwight Maetche. Maetche, who played for the Brooklyn Redmen Senior A squad in Ontario fast season, is one of the best lacrosse goalies in the country. His: performance Friday night left little room for debate. When the dust had settled, the Indians came away with an im- pressive 15-7 victory. Maetche was tested, but let no ball in. The Indians’ next home game is this Friday night, May 14, at the Lonsdale recreation centre arena against Surrey. “a oO NOTICE TO MOTORISTS PORTEAU BLUFFS ROCK SCALING PROJECT _SEA-TO-SKY HIGHWAY 99.
