3 - Sunday, December 13, 1992 ~ North Shore News Cab co’s business suffering - union THE UNION representing employees says the North Vancotver-based cab company shift changes and employee rights. striking North Shore Taxi has lost a significant portion of its business since the start of the lengthy strike, despite the company’s claims to the contrary. The strike is now into its 345th day. “Since the advent of the strike, the union has attempted to in- terfere with the company’s business by encouraging other companies not to use North Shore taxis, but this effort has been largely unsuccessful from the company’s point of view,” said North Shore Taxi spokesman Ali Damiji. North Shore Taxi dispatchers, office staff and mechanics belong- ing to Teamsters union Local 213 have been on strike since Nov. 9 after mediation efforts to reach a new collective agreement broke down. Damji also said that North Shore Taxi filed a complaint with the Industrial Relations Council CIRC) after the union began picketing the two main North Vancouver depots of the Canada Post Corp. ‘‘resulting in the union’s undertaking not to pickez at the post offices at any time that North Shore Taxi is doing business there.’” But union spokesman Grant Wood, who showed the News a copy of the IRC’s written deci- sion, said the IRC dismissed North Shore Taxi’s application. He added that the union has agreed to remove its information picket line from the Canada Post depots if North Shore Taxi is call- ed to pick up customers. Wood said the union has received “almost 100% support’’ from Canada Post letter carriers not to use North Shore Taxi vehi- cles to get to their postal routes from the two depots. Canada Post spokesman Doug McClelland said the Crown cor- poration is aware of the North Shore Taxi strike, but he added that the lacvor dispute has not disrupted postal business on the North Shore. Wood also denied Damiji‘s claim that the company ‘“‘has con- sistently abided by the collective agreement and has no intention of breaking the union.” By Surj Rattan News Reporter “~ can cite several incidents where they have broken the col- lective agreement,’’ said Wood. He added that North Shore Taxi cut off the union’s medical benefits on Dec. 1. Damji said North Shore Taxi has agreed to about five ‘‘signifi- cant’’ changes in response to the union’s bargaining proposals and has also offered Janguage to ad- dress some cf the union’s key For just $45 (U.S. funds) a night jus: . rer she . § you can shop ul you drop! But Wood said he does not know why Damji, who is employed by the management consulting firm Clifford Group Lid., has difficulty with the clauses contained in the previous collective agreement when the contract was negotiated by Dam- ji's employer, Jim Clifford. “Their big beef is flexibility. Nothing is stopping them from firing or laying off a guy. That's within their right,’’ said Wood. Tel. (604) 922-3386 Suite 205 - 1455 Bellevue Ave. Cou ri ay West Vancouver, B.C.
