Narrow your choices before hitting dealer showrooms AS NEXT year’s car models hit dealers’ showrooms and old models go on ‘‘sale,’’ you may have decided that now is a good time to shop for a new car. To get the most for your money, the Better Business Bureau of Mainland B.C. offers these tips. + First, narrow down your choices before you visit any showrooms . by comparing various makes and models in relation to your budget, lifestyic and family needs. Infor- mation on fuel consumption, safe- ty features, optional equipmerc, crash tests, and repair statistics are available from consumer and automobile magazines at local libraries. You should know from your research the dealers’ actual cost. Use that figure as a starting point ‘when negotiating price. The dealer’s cost probably doesn’t in- clude options, such as air condi- tioning or a radio. So be prepared to pay more for the options you select. Dealer incentives such as rebates, discounts, and trade-in allowances will affect how much the dealer is willing to ‘deal’ on the new car. Therefore, you may find that selling your old car yourself, al- though time-consuming, puts more money in your pocket. A relatively new feature at some dealerships is the non-negotiable price. The price marked on the car is the price you pay. There is no haggling with a salesperson, who is paid a straight salary and is on- ly there as an ‘‘order taker.”’ Although this eliminates the Stress of negotiating price, it may not result in the lowest price. So be sure to compare prices at other dealerships. {n addition to comparing the price of the car, also compare the cost of financing. Don’t automatically rely on car dealer- ships for financing; compare the annual percentage rate (APR) on loans through your bank or credit union with those offered by dealers. You may be interested in offers for low monthly payments, especially if you are on a tight budget. But in order to keep payments low, you may have to stretch out the fength of the loan and, therefore, pay more in fi- nance charges. So be sure to look at the APR for the total cost of the loan, not just monthly installments. When signing an agreement to purchase an automobile, any de- posit you make may be forfeitable if you do not have the appropriate subject clause to allow you to change your mind.
