GM pony cars
take cues from
latest trends

new Mark VII coupe. The rumor
is that the car will be equipped
with a 300-hp, all-aluminum
DOHC 4.6-litre engine. Mark’s
V-8 engine will give Cadillac a
good run for the money, as
Cadillac prepares to introduce its
new North Star 290-hp, DOHC
V-8 engine.

Already shown at the Van-
couver auto show in January,
Ford’s Probe and Mercury’s
Villager mini-van will arrive of-
ficially in June and late summer,
respectively. The Probe, as before,
is engineered by Mazda with the
exterior and interior designs penn-
ed by Ford’s own designers. The
front-wheel drive Villager mini-
van, jointly developed with
Nissan, will be marketed just
below the Acrostar models. A
3.0-litre V-6 engine (borrowed
from the Nissan 300ZX), leather
seats, CD player, and keyless en-
try system are some of the
features.

As if these aren’t enough, we
still have plenty of exciting pro-
ducts to expect from GM. GM has
gotten quite a stir lately, as GM’s
outside board of directors
demoted Lloyd Revss from the
position of president on April 6.
They also took away chairman
Robert Stempel’s post as head of
the board’s executive committee.
The board was getting tired of
waiting for a recovery, and essen-
tially said, “You guys aren’t mov-
ing fast enough.”

In any case, GM will overhaul!

troduce the new Chevy Camaro
and Pontiac Firebird in the '93
model year. Saturn will also in-
troduce a station wagon version of
its plastic-bodied sedan this fall.

I had an opportunity to see
about 50 prototypes of the new
Camaro and Firebird a year ago
at GM?’s technical centre in
Michigan — an opportunity that
no other journalists had yet.

Although not radical in design,
the two sports cars took refined
and macho at the same time,
while retaining some of the cur-
rent models’ design cues. Mod-
ernization of these cars includes a
composite plastic body, like the
Saturn, and standard airbags and
ABS. You should be able to buy
GM’s new pony cars at the begin-
ning of 1993.

Cadillac will introduce the
previously mentioned 4,6-litre,
DOHC, 32-valve V-8 engine first
in the Allante model, then in the
Eldorado and Seviile some time
during the °$3 model year. With
290 hp and 290 foot-pounds of
torque, this engine will make
Cadillac extremely competitive in
the luxury car market.

Finally, General Motors of
Canada has just introduced a new
brand name, Asuna, which will
market versions of Geo Tracker
and Isuzu Impulse at the Pon-
tiac-Buick dealerships.

So there we have it — an in-
credible number of new products
to come within just the next
twelve months. Don’t get too
overwhelmed yet, though, we still
haven’t covered the European and
Asian models...
