Maplewood Farm

LOCATED ON the east
side of the Seymour River,
Maplewood Farm has
become a popular year-
round attraction on the
North Shore and has drawn
over 750,000 visitors since
its opening.

Operated by North Vancouver
District, this two-hectare (five-
acre) ‘Park Farm’”’ is both an en-
joyable and an educational piace
for people of all ages.

The land on which the farm is
situated was originally owned in
1914 by a Mr. Akiyo Kogo.

Buildings were erected on the
property by the second owner,
Mr. Joseph Ellis, to accommodate
a family dairy business that pro-
duced and sold raw milk.

Subsequent owners, the Smyths,
converted the farm for use in their
business, the breeding, training
and boarding of dogs.

The Smyths sold the farm in
1964 to the McClung family.

Jazzercise

classes for
kids offered

NORTH SHORE Neighbourhood
House (NSNH) is offering a
Junior Jazzercise program for
seven to 12-year-olds.

Participants learn the dance
Steps involved and at the same
time improve their flexibility,
balance and coordination.

Classes meet Saturdays from 11
a.m. to 12 p.m. beginning Apri}
11 and running through to June
20.

The 10 classes cost $28 or $3.25
each on a drop-in basis.

For adults, NSNH is offering
Step Jazzercise. This class com-
bines the dancing of jazzercise
with the low-impact workout of
step exercise.

Step Jazzercise meets Mondays
from 6:15 to 7:15 and costs $4.50
per drop-in or participants can
use the jazzercise passes.

developed for use as a ‘‘children’s
farm.”*

Dirk Oostindie, the North Van-
couver District parks superintend-
ent, was instrumental in proposing
that the property be developed
and utilized for educating and ex-
posing the public, particularly
young city-dweiling children, to
many aspects of farm life.

Opened in June of 1975, the
farm is comprised of several dif-
ferent areas. Some of the most
popular include: Goathill, a pen
where visitors may mingle with its
friendly and curious occupants,
and Rabbitat, a covered petting
area where bunnies and guinea
pigs reside.

Other animals that you'll find
on the farm are cows (there are
currently three new calves),

horses, donkeys, sheep, pigs and a
variety of feathered friends.

A particularly pleasant feature
on the property is the picturesque
manmade pond where ducks and
visiting Canada geese are found.

Adjacent to the pond is a piece
of land on which the district is
proposing to build a heritage farm-
house, vegetable and herb
garden, and a large barn to be us-
ed for presentations and storing
farm equipment.

Maplewood Farm is open daily
from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. except for
non-holiday Mondays.

Time slots for group bookings
are available from 10:30 a.m.

Admission is $1.50 per adult
and $1 per child or senior, ex-
cluding GST. Family rates avail-
able.

Food and beverages are not sold
on the grounds, so bring a picnic
lunch and enjoy yourself!
