The spirit of the sound ot that
tumultuous time 23-0dd years age
has been absorbed by a number of
youny bands dabbling in the
retro-proove,

Seattle-based The Posies scored
double-plus-pood by snauging a
major label deal (Geffen) and a
producer (John Leckie — XTC, The
Fall, Magazine...) who was able to
project the sound sought by the
band.

The result. Dear 23, offers a
crisp set af pop sounds, When
creative team Kenneth Stringfellow
and Jonathan Aver hit stride, such
as on a song like Everyone Moves
Away, nostalgic time-travelling
reveals itself as simply good
songwriting.

The Posies appear on a multi-
hand bill at the UBC SUB

Music Now: Did you set out to
make the 1960s sounds your
musical touchstone?
Stringfellow: “I think we're in-
fluenced by songs, mostly. There's
a certain sound the ‘60s have, but
a lot of it is songwriting. too. We
worked on really formatted songs
that aren‘t big rock instrumentals.
They are just constructed pop
songs, basically. But that seems to
have a lot of the connotations of
the 60s, which is interesting
because that implies that the “80s
weren't based around songwriting
— more based around dance
grooves. We write songs that can
be played with a voice and a
guitar.
