Recycling creates jobs

New ICBC project saves 7,650 trees annually

we've told you about
ICBC’s salvage program for
wrecked vehicles, and how
millions of dollars are re-
covered each year for the
Autoplan fund.

While this is recycling on a
Jarge scale, we did not want to
overlook smaller efforts to cut
waste and protect’ the environ.
ment.

In March of this year, we turn-
ed our attention to the waste
baskets beside our desks and
started’a paper recycling program.
We asked ICBC employees to aim
their waste paper at recycling bins,
not the garbage bins. No big deal
— right?

Wrong — 450 metric tonnes of
paper (the equivalent of 7,650
trees) is a big deal. That's what
ICBC estimates it will recycle an-
nually.

With 61 offices and a staff of
over 3,800 spread throughout the
province, the corporation needed
a simple but effective program.
The first to come on board to
assist with the start-up was the
Simon Fraser Society for Com-
munity Living and Rite Way
Distributors, both of which were
awarded tabor contracts for the
program.

Educational and implementation
sessions were held for employees
and recycling bins appeared next
to garbage bins. It was an easy

transition, you just had to
remember the few non-reevelable
items that still had to go in the
garbage.

Mentally handicapped workers,
hired to collect the paper at Lower
Mainland offices, began work
immediately. During the first four
months of the program they col-
lected 120 metric tonnes of paper
from Lower Mainland facilities
alone.

With offices outside Greater
Vancouver now participating. a
total of 103 handicapped people
now have full-time jobs. The
potential fundraising oppor-
tunities for non-profit societies
could be as much as $45,000 a

month,

So, while the acres of wrecked
cars at Queensboro represent a
major recycling effort, so do those
yellow collection bins in ICBC fa-
cilities across the province. We are

$100,000 annually, and that’s a
worthwhile accomplishment.
