Help’s at hand HELP’S AT Hand, a_ weekly feature by the North Shore Infor- mation and Volunteer Centre, an- swers questions about and discusses such tcpics as govern- ment policies and programs, benefits, consumer and _ legal rights, taxation and public ser- vices. I assumed that I had done everything right and that I wouldn’t have to worry about it again, but now a friend tells me that I should have registered the will in Victoria. Is this true and how do I do it? Answer: A correctly drawn-up will is valid whether or not it is registered. If your executor: is a close relative who lives near you and knows where you keep your will or has a copy of it, it may not be necessary to register the will. The registry for wills has moved from Victoria and is now at the Division of Vital Statistics, 800 Hornby St., in Vancouver, tele- phone 660-2937. While it is not mandatory to file a Wills Notice it is strongly recommended. The law requires your executor or administrator to conduct a Wills Notice search be- fore a Letters of Probate can be granted. Having the will registered assists the administrators of the estate in determining not only where the will may be stored (bank safety deposit box, desk drawer, etc.) but also which of possible several documents is actually the iast will and testament of the deceased. You can obtain a notice form from Vital Statistics at the Van- couver address or by writing to the Division of Vital Statistics, 200-200 E. 23rd St., North Vancouver, V7L 4R4, telephone 660-1268 (the hours for the North Vancouver of- fice are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) Once you have completed the form and returned it along with the $10 filing fee, Vital Statistics will send you an acknowledgement which you should keep with your will, If you should revoke or change the location of your will, you should complete the ap- propriate section of the same form and follow the same procedure as with the original filing. Question: Whenever I see a let- ter where someone has written of their deep concern about the rights of ihe elderly or disabled, legal in- justice, about the environment, toxic waste, pollution, recycling or other vita! issues, I, too, want to let myself be heard. If ail of us write letters and lob- by about any problem that could be solved by private, corporate, municipal, provincial or federal action, this would become a better world to live in, and we would have the gratification of knowing that we did everything within our power towards this. But I do not know how to get the addresses of such officials as Premier Vander Zalm and other elected officials, or such persons as the president of Canada Post Cor- poration or EXXON. Where can I get such information? Answer: You can get addresses for anywhere from the Vancouver Public Library Directory Informa- tion at 665-3360. The library will also give you the correct form of address for officials, such as Your Worship, or Honorable for exam- ple. It would be a good idea to make photocopies of your letter to send to the news media and appropriate organizations asking for their sup- port and lobbying strength. You can list these at the bottom of your letter for extra emphasis. For instance, you should send a copy of any letter concerning the rights of the disabled to the Premier’s Advisory Council for the Disabled, Room 224, 800 Hornby St., Vancouver, B.C., V6Z 2C5.
