6 - Friday, March 3, 1989 — North Shore News INSIGHTS Get your papers before you buy a home in B.C.! IF THE DREAM OF OWNING A HOME is racist, then color ‘‘racist’’ every young white Lower Mainlander with that dream who doesn’t yet own one — and soon may NEVER own one within 50 km of Vancouver. This is what all the drivel by local politicians boils down to when they lecture us about how naughty we are to be ‘‘racist”’ towards Hong Kong buyers. For decades now Chinese (like Japanese) have been welcome im- migrants to B.C. because they are law-abiding, hard-working and in- dependent. They CONTRIBUTE. Their ultimate symbol today is B.C. Lt. Gov. David Lam. Today’s Hong Kong gold is something else again. It’s foreign- ers a quarter of a world away snapping up Vancouver homes, sight unseen, at madly inflated prices which drive up ALL home prices ~ many of those buyers with no immediate plans to. ‘‘le here, if ever. Far from being ‘‘racist,’’ Y. W.LJ. Clark, 1922- resentment by young white Van- couver families is purely economic. Hong Kong gold is destroying their legitimate dreams. Unquestionably, offshore in- vestment is welcome. But it should be confined to industrial and commercial property, and to enterprises creating jobs in B.C. In both those areas the opportunities for offshore investors remain un- limited. But NOT British Columbians" homes — the ultimate measure of our prosperity. The message from Victoria to Hong Kong, when the Legislature reconvenes on March 15, should be friendly but firm: **We welcome your money, your skilis and you yourselves — if you wish fo put down roots here as Canadians. But until we see your landed immigrant papers, you cannot buy any more B.C. homes." That’s not “‘racist.’’ It’s com- mon justice. And common sense. e+e SEARCHING ... Total cost of the association’s recently proposed economic package would add an estimated 26.82 per cent in wages and benefits to instructor’s contracts. The additional 5.83 per cent cost of implementing 2 new reduced workload definition at the college would push the total to jast under 33 per cent this year alone. And while no one would begrudge increased invest- ment in better education, the question of where the funds for sach a major single investment will come from must first be answered. Faculty association representatives at the college say their basic 14 per cent wage increase demand is an at- tempt to maintain parity with B.C.’s school teachers, whose unions have already won comparable wage set- tlements. Rat those increases will be spread over two years; Capilenc college faculty want their wage increase to come into effect April 1. And local school districts can raise budget funds through local taxation; community colleges cannot. With Capilano College already running into a majer space squeeze and in immediate need of facility overhaul, faculty wage and benefit demands should be tempered by an overall recognition of what will reasonably be available for Capilano College this year from the provincial government.
