They enact in- teresting stories about elephants caught in taxi cabs without pooper scoopers and re-live days from the lives of audience members. Improvisational theatre 1s what Theatresports 1s all about. It has just started in North Van and will be here at least until the end of the sum- mer, longer if the popularity increases. The idea is not new to Van- couver. Theatresports has been operating at City Stage for about four years now, but the move to North Van- couver is another experiment and another showcase for closet actors and_ theatre buffs. The format is a contest bet- ween two teams to see who can improvise a_ series of short skits in the most enter- taining manner. The skits can be very bizarre, and are usually very funny. The first few houses have not been big. About 25 spec- tators showed up at Presenta- tion Hoyse last Frnday, but larger audiences are needed if North Shore Theatresports is to succeed More North Shore participants are also eagerly sought by the organizers Anyone can take part ina performing team, or be an audience member Since the show 1s a hitthle out of the or dinary, here are a few ups 4 DAYS ONLY! NANCY WEATHERLEY from Barry Cook, one of the North Shore Theatresports Organizers on being a suc- cessful spectator or partici- pant. A good specator must be ready to ‘‘accept just about anything onstage.”’ ‘lots of actors can’t improvise”’ The audience is the place for vocal people who like to help the actors out with sugges- tions for scenes and props. The audience even gets to judge part of the show, by holding up red or green cards to indicate which team’s scene was the best. Theatresports also ‘‘offers casting agents and directors a potpourri of talent’’ to look over. Although people aren't *‘discovered’’ every week through Threatresports, it is One way to perform onstage when jobs are scarce. The North Shore offshoot is not identical to the City Stage program. Cook says it’s closer to the Original concept which Started seven years ago at the Loose Moose in Calgary. The Presentation House workshops are more intensive than at City Stage, and the program is slightly different. For anyone who is _ in- terested in seeing what it’s all about before plunging onto the stage to be made a fool of, workshops are open, and focal interest is eagerly ncouraged.
