FUN_IN THE SUN Lounging around O.K. corral “What do you want to go to Tombstone for?” someone asked me. “You'll see the whole place in fifteen minutes.” It just goes to show you that you don't believe everything you hear. Of all the places we visited in Arizona, we had the most fun in Tombstone. But that may have something to do with the people we met. The tourist bureau gave us the name of a lady to call in Tombstone so that we'd be sure to get all the in- formation I wanted. We particularly wanted to see the re-enactment of the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral so I called Gabe Brett. “Come and see me at my Doll House, just a couple of doors away from the O.K. corral and I'll take you there myself,” she said. When we got there, we were greeted by a man in full black Western regalia, a bit out of place in a shop full of dainty little dolls. He introduced himself as Bill Brett, Gabe’s husband. I was getting a bit edgy about missing the gunfight but Bill only laughed. “They can't vel- wise by Barbara McCreadie. Be ee start without me playing Morgan Earp.” Gabe joined us and we Tm headed for the O.K. Corral. The performance lasts about an hour including about eight short skits depicting bar-room life in old Tomb- stone. The gunfight is the finale and lasts only 35 seconds. Worth seeing, especially when you know someone on the home team. The players, known as the “Wild Bunch” perform for the hell of it — all are dedicated amateurs in- cluding a dentist, a couple of merchants and, of course, Bill Brett. The biggest joke of the day was when Gabe told us Bill's occupation — he's Colonel Brett of U.S. Army Intelligence, stationed at nearby Fort Huachuaca. The Bretts were great fun. After the gunfight they escorted us all over the town. Don't miss the Bird Cage theatre. The museum in back is great — old and dusty and nothing fancy. The theatre is just as it was when Lotta Crabtree played there but all the seats are gone. The Rose Tree Museum is in one of Tombstone’s oldest Suffering from beaver fever 100 MILE HOUSE, B.C. (UPC) - Beaverrhea is no longer a laughing matter in this small logging com- munity where the 2,000 residents plan to exact revenge on Canada's national emblem for their extreme discomfort. Last fall, what local residents call “beaver fever” struck 60 victims, some of whom lost 40 pounds because of severe diarrhea. To avoid a painful recurrence this spring. village leaders are deter- mined to act now. Trappers and en- vironmentalists plan to capture 150 beavers infested with a parasitic organism - “giardialamblia” - that has contaminated Bridge Creek. the major source of water in the village 400 kilometres Two exciting true-life adventure tims DESERT VOYAGE A 400 km boat expedition into the normaly dry witderness of infand Austratia Spectecutar! The beavers, though, as carriers, are unaffected by its presence. “Trouble broke out in September when the number of cases of this ailment increased cight to ten times from what they usually are,” said public health inspector Doug Fogel. Village authorities estimated last fall's outbreak was acutally “five times” the 60 cases reported, Fogel said. “A lot of those affected wouldn't say anything because people here pride themselves on being able to withstand minus 40 (Celsius) temperatures and rough condibons a “Wrinkles Away’ Hand Held Steamer Steam away wrinkies trom all wearing apparel teopast do manutes wo Piece hght weight no poarts Ls) wear out Guaranteed for) year $29.95 (dear ' forget ta ask Cauthver oc We have Preparing for a trip? ary teaver ayort faye Gsathvern s Var ation Check bist Or cow ett Mu pe TAO ACE OSSCFHAM I Sto 922-9650__ _ 844 Park Royal North, West Van. “At first, people kind of chuckled about the problem but beaverrhea is an ac- cepted problem now and we've been busy researching how to develop a new water supply,” he said. Finding an alternative to the creek's water supply, supplemented by a well system during the winter, could cost $1 million, said the mayor of the village “which has the dubious distinction of the first place in Canada to be sick over a bunch of beavers.” Mayor Ross Marks helped launch a= public health campaign to boil all water but refuses to take his own advice. “I've been drinking the water for years. The rose tree is the biggest in the world, covering nearly the whole back yard on an overhead trellis. It started from a twig sent from Scotland in the late 1800s and when it blooms, white petais cover the ground like snow. Gabe and Bill took us for dinner at Lucky Cuss restaurant and we enjoyed the best meal of the whole visit to Arizona. In fact, the trip to Tombstone is wor- thwhile if you only go for dinner! The speciality of the house is barbecued ribs but unlike any other ribs in the world. They are smoked over mesquite logs for twelve hours and you won't find those logs anywhere else. The plates come in two sizes $6.95 and $8.95. I'd defy anyone to finish the large size along with the baked potato, coleslaw and fresh rolls.
