Now that the ‘weather has

decided to do its beautiful
thing, you want to be Gut and.
about, houseplant lover.
Still, you feel guilty if you
negiect your beloved plants
or are irate that they droop
and wilt and require: care
and sometimes the time to
give one or. more a decent
burial.

The. secret to having a
successful _houseplant
collection while ‘you have
fun is to choose those that
thrive on neglect.

Yes, Virginia, there are

such. Pretty, lush greenery |

that hangs in there whether
you're around or off to the
tennis courts. Oh, they
require the basics — light,
water food — all right, but
that’s about it. Except for
your admiration.

You say you don’t want a
house full of cacti? Who's to.
blame you, except that many
of these -are hardy and
pleasing to the eye and
produce flowers and keep on
doing it with very little at-
tention from you.

So, consider a few of the
prickly friends and augment
them with, say, the palms.
Ah, those leafy, lacy lovelies
— varieties like the Sago.
the “bottle” or ponytail, the
lady palm, the parlor_or the
spiky: pigmy date. They
green ‘up and grow in
medium light -with watering
weekly or bi-weekly and an
‘occasional dash of fish
emulsion,

get into co-op gardening.
Prisoners do it, though they
work as a group to produce
food for a single source.

To get a group garden
going, it takes one person

of course, a plot.

space... a vacant lot, the
common ground of the
apartment complex or
townhouse development,
city or county owned parks.

Community gardens are

proliferating like the
veritable. rabbits that
menace them.
