Sometimes it seems that nothing works. This issue the Inquiring Reporter asks: ‘Is spanking an effective form of discipline ?"’ Cheryl Hazelton North Vancouver I think that spanking does work. Sometimes just talking to the child is not enough and a spanking will actually help the child although it hurts at the time. This ts not to say I'm promoting violence, though. Robert Young appeared in North Vancouver Provincial Court Wednesday for a bail hearing, and was remanded in custody until the trial. Young was charged on March 13 with breaking and entering and theft of the 500 pound safe which contained cash, cheques and coupons. At the bail hearing, Young admitted to having a lengthy record which includes evidence, which I consider several breaking and en- tering offences. Crown Counsel Deidre Pothecary said there was also an outstanding warrant from Calgary on Young, and that he is awaiting trial on a charge in Powell River. “Taking into con- sideration circumstancial to be a lot of circumstancial evidence,” Judge Nancy Morrison said she had no choice but to keep Young in custody. Morrison also said that she had no alternative but to take Young's “long, heavy and significant record,” into account. Alcohol level almost 4 times legal limit An impaired driver whose blood alcohol readings were some of the highest the judge said she had seen, Wednesday, was fined $250 in North Vancouver Provincial Court. Alexander Gray, aged 62, of 247-1979 Marine Drive, was charged March 5 with having a blood alcohol level over .08. Crown counsel Deidre Pothecary said that Gray was charged after he drove a vehicle over a sidewalk, down a lawn, and came to a stop near the front door of 307 West 23rd Street in North Vancouver. Gray required substantial assistance by police, Pothecary said, and was found to have blood alcohol levels of .31 and .30, almost four times the legal limit. Defence counsel Henry Wood said that Gray had just seperated from his wife of 37 years and this was why he had been drinking heavily. “Those readings are some of the highest I have ever heard,"’ Judge Nancy Morrison said. : NOT TO BE MISSEDE= Airstep & Joyce Reg $35.95-$40.95 Helena Sandles Reg $34 95 Sale *20 Sale *20 White Cross-Celebrity-Selby Reg $43 95-$49 95 Arch Lock-Guildcraft reg $55-$69 95 Sale *30 Sale *35 619 DUNSMUIR ST.
