La Duchesse visits Seymour Stree

Second Tremblay play for Arts Club

The Arts Club Theatre is
presenting the English
language premiere of Michel
Tremblay's ‘La Duchesesse
of Langeais’. Opening on
Wednesday, May 14th at the
old Arts Club Theatre on
Seymour Street, La
Duchesse of Langeais is the
second Tremblay play
presented by the Arts Club
Theatre this season.

With both the Impromptu
of Outremont and La
Duchesse of  Langeais
playing at the two Arts Club
Theatres, Vancouver is
having a unique opportunity
to experience the work of
one of Canada’s foremost
playwrights. La Duchesse of
Langeais opens May 14th in
the umique new cabaret
space of the Arts Club
Theatre on Seymour Street
for a limited run to May 3ist.

Her bottle already half
empty, the Duchess, an
ageing “queen” is trying to ut
her losses and save her
future. Michel Tremblay
utilizes this caricature to
brilliantly expose the
complexities of human
beings. Upraariously funny
yet poignantly touching, La
Duchesse Langeais_ will
stnke a famihar chord in all
who lived and loved as best
they could, only to find
they're alone and in need of
someone to love them back.
Real life it is, but the subject
matter may offend some.

For Vancouver audiences,
Claude Gai will recreate his
stunning orginal role as ‘La
Duchess of Langeais’. He
comes to the Arts Club
directly from a triumphant
run of the French version in
Quebec. As well as extensive

theatre credits including
Tremblay’s ‘En Pieces
Detaches’ and ‘Demain

Burek who has also translted
most of Michel Tremblay’'s
plays. Van Burek directed
the critically praised
‘Damnee Manon’, ‘Sacree
Sandra’ for the Arts Club
Theatre last season and is
also direcung ‘The Im-
promptu of Outremont’ at
the Arts Club Theatre on
Granville Island. Set design
for ‘La Duchesse of
Langeais' is by Resident Set
Designer Ted Roberts and
