Dear Editor: Just when we think we have people convinced of the tremendous fisheries value of these small streams, somebody like Tom Scott, City of North Vancouver Municipal Engineer, makes statements such as appeared in the March 5 issue of the North Shore News. “It is wrong to classify a waterway such as Mackay Creek as a fish habitat just because a few salmon use it”. Well, perhaps Tom Scott has not heard of the Salmonid Enhancement Program which aims to bring back the salmonids (fish frequenting both fresh and salt water, ie. salmon, steelhead, and . sea-run cutthroat trout) to: their historical levels. Fisheries and Oceans Canada through their community advisors situated throughout the province (Mr. Bryan Allen 524-7181, Vancouver to Hope area) encourage and actively solicit individuals, groups, and schools to become involved in small stream projects. For example, the Squaretailers Rod and Reel Club in North Vancouver constructed and installed an aluminum fish ladder on Hastings Creek at Hoskins Road in Lynn Valley to enable coho salmon and No poison bait on North Shore Dear Editor: I am writing in response to an editorial in your Sunday, February 24th edition in which it was suggested that the Fish and Wildlife Branch would be using the pesticide 1080 in areas of North and West Vancouver to eliminate coyotes preying on domestic stock. Let me assure your readers that nothing could be further from the truth. The Branch has received a permit allowing the use of 1080 in the Wildlife Manage- ment Units of the Province in which records of chronic wolf and coyote related livestock losses exist. Management Unit 2-8 is in- cluded, and it encompasses the entire area north of the Fraser River from Squamish to Harrison Hill. However, at least half a dozen conditions contained within the permit ensure that the pesticide could not be used in areas inhabited or normally frequented by peo- ple or domestic pets. Most certainly, the entire North and West Vancouver area would be automatically ex- cluded. Concerning the pesticide itself, 1080 is not used in a concentrated solution. The baits themselves contain such a low amount of 1080 that the possibility of accidents is completely excluded. There are two officially recorded incidents from British Columbia from the 1950’s in which 1080 baits, which at that time were grossly overdosed and used without strict safety re- quirements, were consumed by people. One incident in- volved small children as well. All people had a runn- ing stomach and recovered without any side effects within a day. Frank S. The North Shore Fish. and Game Club has ‘recently undertaken an enhancement project on Mackay Creek, removing the garbage and refuse from the streambed as well as several blockages to fish. The club will then construct and install an incubation box stocked with cutthroat trout eggs. Perhaps today only a few fish inhabit Mackay Creek; hopefully tomorrow many more fish will inhabit the same creek. The stream bank cover that Tom Scott wants to Variance Dear Editor: On Sept. 20, 1979, I received notice to go before the Board of Variance to put forward my objections to a proposed construction pro- ject quite close to my pro- perty line and which ob- viously conflicted with my rights as well as with the District By-laws. On attending, I im- mediately felt intimidated by the Chairman’s: biased at- titude toward me as opposed to my opponent. None of his colleagues took time out to discuss my problems. If Tom Scott has his way every water course in North Vancouver City with as few as twenty fish would most likely be put into culverts. These twenty adult fish, assuming ten male and ten ing very angry to be told this is not their concern, I was further shocked by the Board’s decision, which is extremely unfair in that it blatantly ignores the tremen- dous hardships, financial as well as otherwise, it would have on me as an equal citizen, whereas none exist for the other party. female, will eventually yield . $00 to 700 adult fish. Given fifteen to twenty streams in West Vancouver, North Vancouver City and District this means that if each of those streams had only twenty salmon in them, approximately 15,000 to 20,000 adult fish would be returning to the Howe Sound area for the sportfishermen. If today we write off the streams with twenty fish in them; then tomorrow we will write off the streams with fifty fish-and so on.
