If I had the Aga Khan’s money I'd be in London, but that’s another story. Sydney is where most trips to Australia begin, which is fair enough because that’s where Australia started 200 vears ago. To be precise, on Jan. 26, 1788, Capt. Phillip sailed in with 11 ships and 1,000 souls, including 750 convicts, stepped ashore at Sydney Cove, raised the British flag and put a prawn on the barbie. It was a bizarre social experi- ment: the creation of a prison camp in the South Pacific for what was believed to be an entire crimi- nal class. travel by David Wishart Since then, as every school child knows, Australia has become a promised land to which people have flocked ever since, and Sydney has grown into a world class city. These days most people arrive by Qantas, but the burgeoning cruising industry is allowing more travellers the thrill of sailing be- tween Sydney Heads to join the freighters, submarines, squat fer- ries, the sleek hydrofoils and shoals of sailboats in that spec- tacular harbor. Another spectacular harbor, of course, is Vancouver’s, and visitors will be amazed at other similarities between the two cities: how Sydney folk [eve their beaches, their restaurants (such wonderful oysters and fragrant wine!), and how they see Melbourne as stuffy, rather like Vancouverites often view Toronto. Actually they’re quite wrong. Melbourne has style, glittering hotels such as the new Hyatt on Collins, culture as well as cricket, and characters galore including Brenton Robb, who runs a floating restaurant. When the English cricket team was in town they made his Melbourne Ligijter the unofficial headquarters and Boll- inger the official drink.
