Lynn Valley actor a rising star DAVID Kaye is nonchalant when he describes how he landed the biggest role of his young career. “TL just did my thing and | got the part,” says the I1- year-old at home during a b from shooting of 3000 Mites to Graceland av Bridge Studios in Burnaby last week. The Lynn Valley young- ster has a lead role in the Warner Brothers feature film thar stars Kevin Costner, Kurt Russell, Christian Slater, David Arquette and Courtney Cox. When pressed for more details, Kaye, who attends Grade 6 at Vancouver's Talmud Torah School when he’s not filming, NEWS photo Mike Wakefield reveals that he read for the role at “Kurt and Goldie’s place.” DAVID Kaye is currently shooting 3000 Miles to Graceland with Kurt Russell and Courtney Cox. Of his role, Warner Brothers flew the young actor and his mom, Sandi, to California in February for the screen test. On the doorstep of the Pacific Palisades mansign, the Kayes had no idea that the home belonged to the famous couple, Russell and Goldie Hawn. “We thought we were going to a producer’s house,” says Kaye, who learned he’d be reading with Russell once inside. As for his first impressions of the star, wlio got his start in Hollywood as a child actor, Kave says: “Ele was cool. He just came down in a T-shirt and shorts and told us to watch cartoons or whatever.” . ‘ After reading with Russell, che young actor was asked to return later to read with Cox, who plays Kaye’s mom in the film, a dark comedy/chase picture that follows a group of Elvis imper- sonators on the road after a Las Vegas casino robbery gone awry. “My big thrill that day was meeting Courtney Cox, Goldie, Kurt and when we were there the second time, Lenny Kravitz walked in,” says David (Dave or D.K. to his friends), who now gets a kick out of watching Cox nighdy on TV. The Friends star is just the latest leading lady to play on-screen mom to Kaye, who landec. his first film role at xge four, as Brad Pitt's sen in Legends of the Fall. Pam Dawber played mom to the youngster in the CBS movie of the week Marriage of Convenience, while Jane Seymour stepped into the role for The Outer Limits. Real-life mom Sandi is still getting used to her son’s budding screen career and says the fam- ily’s just taking it one day at a time. ; ; “We don't even know what to expect,” she says. Kaye’s shooting scli€dule — 3 days on this project, including a week of filming in Las Vegas earlier this month — keeps the family on its toes. “It certainly turns the house upside down,” says Sandi, who runs a small printing business while caring for David and his sisters, Sasha, six, and Mia, 2%. Husband Stephen is an obstetri- cian-gynecologist. The Kayes moved to Canada from South Africa before David was born and lived first in Saskatchewan before relocating to the West Coast. They were at a film industry expo with David, at BC Place, when an agent spotted the youngster, then aged three, and gave the Kayes er card. David was four when he was cast in Legends of the Fall and celebrated his fitth birthday on set near Canmore, Alberta. David remembers a surprise birthday party in the lunch teat and getting gifts from his on-screen dad, Brad Pitt, who hadn’t yet become a housshold name. “My inom was telling everybody I was in a movie with Brad Pitt. Even my babysitter said: “Who?’,” says the youngster, whose agent, Ross Rhodes, is predicting that his young talent won't be an unknown for long. The role in 3000 Miles to Graceland is Kaye’s big break, says Rhodes. “This is the kind of thing that just makes a kid’s career take off. it’s one thing to do movies-of-the- week for television but to have a lead in a feature film ... that’s a launch to a huge career.” * PU CARGO CONFISCATED FOR NON-PAYMENT NEW HAND KNOTTED PERSIAN AND ORIENTAL CARPETS LARGE, MEDIUM AND SMALL SIZES, HANDMADE OF PURE SILKS, WOOLS, CAMEL HAIR AND NATURAL FIBRE & MAJORITY TRADITIONAL PERSIAN AND ASIAN RUGS ADDED AND SUPPLEMENTED WITH Persian Carpets ¢ Fine Mahi Tabriz ¢ Silk Qum * Isphahan ° Hunting Pattern Jewellery e Diamonds © Rubies e Emeraids Sapphires © Rings * Pendants Location: Masonic Hall, 1763 Bellevue, West Vancouver Date: Sunday, April 2, 2600 1 Time: Public viewing from 12 noon, Auction at 1 p.m. All items clear of liens and encumbrances.
