Wednesday, January 12, 2000 — North Shore News ~ & Woman still suffers years after surgery to abdomen From pagel ment. Said her mocher Trudy Shobridge, “Shannon is disap- pointed. She says she was in hospital for the various surgeries longer than he was suspended for.” Last July, Shannon Shobridge was awarded $235, 000 at the end ofa civil trial in B.C. Supreme Court. She sue- cessfully sued Thomas, Lions Gate Hospital (LGH) and three operating, = rooms nurses. Thomas” portion was $154,305. Thomas — operated on Shannon Shobridge on Sept. 13 1995. If successful, the surgery would have relieved Shobridge’s persistent pelvic pain and dysmenorrhea. The gauze rol] was used to keep the bowel away from where the sur- geon was working. The gauze roli was never counted by oper- ating, room nurses, which is a breach of standard care. On Dee. 4, 1995, an ailing Shobridge underwent. another operation at LGH. The gauze roll, was discovered to the “shock and horror” of nurses, according to a B.C. Supreme did not mention the gauze roll in a consultative report to Shobridge’s new doctor. Two months after the gauze roll, was) discovered, Thomas met with Shobridge in a LGH administrator's — office and revealed a “swab” had been left in her, according to the court decision. Two years later, during examination for discovery for the lawsuit, Shobridge learned about the size of the gauze. Shobridge’s mother said the $235,000 award has been reduced by about $100,000 with another court ruling, that called tor Shannon to pay some court costs. Trudy Shobridge says her daughter continues to have ill health and sees a psychi- atrist. Trudy Shobridge said Shannon has had more than a dozen surgeries to correct the first operation. More plastic surgery is planned. “The court case put her down and made her feel like she was a nothing... The court system victimizes the vic- tim,” said Trudy Shobridge. Shannon Shobridge is an Argyle grad. She lives in Richmond with her husband and children, ages two and nine months.
