Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver. ! am proud of the many past presidents who have contributed to the success of the Club through involvement in many projects and services it has given the community during its first three- quarter century. From its inception on March 16, 1921 to the present, the Club’s contributions have included, to mention only a few: a change house on the beach at the foot of St. Patricks Avenue (now the abandoned site of the Cassiar dock and warehouse), the donation of an ambulance to the City of North Vancouver in the ‘20s and establishment of seniors’ housing in the ‘40s. During the ‘50s and ‘60s, the completion of Kiwanis Towers and Kiwanis Lynn Manor resulted in additional accommodations for seniors as well as a personal care facility. In the °70s, the Club was involved in the planning and constniction of Cedarview Lodge, an intermediate- care facility and for the past five years has worked diligently to promote the building of Kiwanis Parkway Place, a multi-level care facility on Mount Seymour Parkway at Berkley. More recent projects include the Kiwanis/Scouts Canada Camp at Lynn Creck, establishment of the Young Entrepreneurs program in North Vancouver and scholarships for graduating students from each of the seven North Vancouver high schools. Through the efforts of present and past Club members, the Kiwanis motto, “We Build" has been well demonstrated by the Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver, We are proud of our 75-year heritage and are dedicated to continuing service to Norih Vancouver for the next quarter- century and beyond. Finally, 1 would point out that replacements are always sought for members who pass on, move out of the area or leave for other reasons. Membership in the Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver is open to men and women who wish to dedicate themselves to community service as well as the enhancement of the qualiry of life and care for seniors in residence through the organization of social activities. | KRWANIS CLUB PAST PRESIDENTS The Kiwanis Club of North Vancouver's list of past presidents reads like a virtual “who’s who” of North Vancouver. Starting with its first president Percy Ward who served two terms it has included many well known business and profcssicnals who were instrumental in shaping the cormmunity into what it is today. Mr. Ward who was born in England came to the North Shore in 1909, he helped organize the famed 6th Field Company Canadian Engineers, saw action at Ypres, the Somme and Vimy, served on the District Council, was secretary of Burrard Inlet Tunnel and Bridge Company and manager after the Second Naitows Bridge was constructed, in 1933 he was appointed manager of the North Vancouver General Hospital and in 1936 became provincial inspector of hospitals. Percy also was a member of the Army and Navy Veterans, the Canadian Legion and the Elks. The ‘standard’ was set and each following presidents has worked hard to maintain or improve it, all to the long term benefit of the community. The current president Ron Doyle is a professional engineer and a partner in Cook Pickering & Doyle and came to the club after extensive involvement with the Scouts Canada.
