When bazaar time comes around, they ask me to take the tickets, or sce to the tea. My mother had a foot-pow- ered Singer which she tried to introduce me to, but I have a block, obviously, in my hand- foct coordination. I broke so many pulleys she finally abandoned the struggle. It took me months to mas- ter a bicycle — I'd put my hands on the steering, my feet would fly off the pedals. I know there are clever alterna- tives to needle and thread these days — I tried one a couple of years ago when a customer of my husband’s had arranged a little golf tour- nament on the Island. No, I’m no good at golf either, but I was going to walk around with my darling, so I needed an appropriate cos- tume, as we used to say. To that end I bought a denim ~ shirt and skirt. But the skirt was far too long so I got some of that iron-on tape and applied it all around on about a six-inch foldover. It began to betray me at the fourth hole, and by the time _ we'd achieved the !8th hole the whole darn thing was flap- ping around my ankles. Thus do I marvel when IJ see “women knitting a foot-shaped sock or crocheting the edge of a hanky or tossing an afghan together. t Bree at Baaenite STE Nurtt Amerin’s non taen ( it itied —— seta of arsthetus? Then just lately Chad the pleasure of meeting Edna Dickson, who must surely be the all-time champion needie- woman of the world. She lives, with her husband in the Kiwanis building in Lynn falley — he’s no slouch either, he’s into wood-work- ing — and fim sure Edna’s single-handed output would surpass that of your average crafis group. She’s a power-house with needle and thread (and wool ind silk and beads and pearl buttons). Bob Dickson was a banker, he’s in his 80s naw, so you know the sort of sober chap he'd have had to be. Well, you should have seen the doll’s house he made fora raffle -— he modeled the fur- niture for it on what he and Edna had in their own house, including a grand piano, made to scale. Edna is an artist, both the paint kind as well as needle- work pictures, and in addition her husband says her cooking rivals any chef's. It took quite a bit of per- suading before he’d give in to occasional communal meals in the lodge dining-room, as a matter of fact. He hadn’t _ grasped that someone else’s cookery is a treat every once in a while, even to the best of cooks. And when that good cook has committed herself to making 36 afghans to go toa summer camp for children that her daughter is interested in, she surely relishes the odd meal from another source. She had 14 completed at last count. There’s nothing jumped-up about Edna’s out- put. She doesn’t scrape things together just to make a show- ing. She brought out 2 table- cloth she’d made, company- Daryl Wing Pharmacist Capsule Comments Our pharmacists are a great source of information about drugs and drug- taking. The two of them comple- ment each other with their lively imaginations. One day Ledna found a good-looking hible-feg that a neighbor had abandoned. Goad wood obvi- ously, so she took it home to her husband. He scraped and scoured it down fo the clean wood then turned it upside- down, fixed two squares of matching wood at the base and topped it with two wood- en circles, Now the whole thing's been stained, varnished and decorated with banding and reincarnated into an ele- gant plant stind. On a visit to England, Edna saw what the Victorians called a gentleman's shaving- stand. It looked 10 her just what she needed for the jew- elry items she makes in quan- tity, so She made a sketch of it and brought it home to Bob. He made it to her direction, and it now does handsome duty that would surely sur- prise any old geezer who had counted on one for trimming his mutton-chop whiskers. People who do needlework will know the term “bargcllo, at which Edna is a whiz. It is done with skeins of wool and silk and lends itself to glitter, but it produces a very firm, very carpet-like fabric which Edna has used for many hand- some purses and pin cushions and chair seats. One of the whimsies she keeps on her own wall is a lord-of-the-manor bell-puli that she created in bargello — no pretty maid appears if you tug il, but it sure gives the place a shot of grandeur. Her biggest wish in these days is to reach 100. Looking at all the irons she’s got in the fire, she’s got to last at least that long. Someone's sure to want fifty- odd afghans. What a wonder- ful life.
