The Caulfeild wing of Pastameli opened in the Something Special shopping cen- tre in 1987, Its combination of simple good quality Italian fast food and warm informal New York style pizzeria atmosphere has estab- ished it as a popular neighbor- hood eatery ina high-altitude, high-income area that has been far less welcoming to several more serious restaurants. The North Vancouver version of Pastameli is less ambitious than its Caulfeild cousin. Its menu is smafler and its interior more spartan but it still manages to turn out the basic and appeal- ing Pastameli goods, The Westview Pastamell is fast- food functional: a halt-dezen solid wooden booths running parallel to a serve-yourself counter, manned by a youthful staff. Whereas the Caulfeild Pastameli ventures into more complex dishes such as Osso Bucco, Veal Marsala and Chicken Cacciatore, Westview sticks to the ground-level blue- collar crowd pleasers: cappucci- nos and sandwiches ($2 to $6); pasta ($7 to $9 for dishes ranging from Spaghetti with Meat Sauce to Veal Cannelloni); and pizza ($7 to $17).
