An average vane takes about
four days to complete, but more
detailed designs — like Cameron’s
magnificent brass jellyfish inspired
by a National Geographic article,
and ships with complex rigging —
can take as long as two weeks.

His prices depend on the dif-
ficulty of the job, from $200 fora
simple piece to as much as $1,300
for a fully rigged, multi-mast
vessel.

“Ptry to keep them to a certain
size. You want them to be seen
but not look outrageous."'

The images themselves sit on a
single ball bearing so the wind can
move them with ease. The shiny
brass look will slowly oxidize to
black, but vanes can last as long
as 75 years, according to
Cameron,

“There used to be a large one
on Frank Baker's restaurant in
West Vancouver,’ says Cameron.
“Ie was of Baker blowing his
horn. After they closed the res-
taurant someone bought the vane
and put it on a shed on a property
facing Highway 401 in Burnaby.
It really looks out of place — this
gigantic weather vane on a tiny
shed — but. everyone driving
down the 401 notices it."'

Cameron says weather vanes
qualify as the most arrogant form
of sculpture,

"ft don't know of any other
artwork where you take it and
stick it up on your house,"’ he
laughs.
