Guide books have a variety of strengths

would be a target of Lonely
Planet's young researchers.

The result is Western Europe
and Mediterranean Europe, both
$29.95, as well as Scandinavian
and Baltic Europe ($22.95).

As usual, Lonely Planet has
done a thorough job, the only
drawbacks being their weight
(teetering close to excess baggage)
and the fact that their shoestring
focus could cause some travellers
to miss some monuments.

For example, they do not men-
tion the elegant Theatercafeen in
Oslo's Continental Hotel.

This is 19th century, handsome,
proud Europe at its best, and al-
though ridiculously expensive, it is
worth a coffee, or at least a walk
through.

There are cheaper books
around, such as Rick Steves’ 2 to
22 Days in Britain (also Rain-
coast, $13.95).

This is a useful itinerary plan-
ner, but don't look for any in-
sights,

1 also have trouble with authors
{and the Globe and Mail) who
can't understand that Scotch
whisky is not spelled the same as
Irish, American or Canadian
whiskey,

College singers
perform Orff’s
Carmina Burana

WHAT DO 160 voices sound like
when they take on composer Carl
Orff's best-known work, Carmina
Burana? Come to Centennial
Theatre this afternoon and you'll
find out,

Lars Kaario and the Capilano
College Singers, Community
Choir and Percussion Ensemble
will perform Orff’s powerful
master work based on poems used
in the repertory of a group of
13th century wayward monks.

The collection celebrates ele-
ments of life that Christians
would normally consider sins —-
wine, women, song and gambling.

‘While Carmina Burana does
have dark qualities to it — like
people lamenting the fact that
they’d lost everything — there are
a lot of songs about love, how
love can help you overcome the
greatest difficulties in life,’’ said
Kaario.

He said Carmina Burana, the
college’s major work of the year,
has wide appeal because of “its
rhythmic, catchy tunes.

Kaario and company will pres-
ent one performance of Carmina
Burana only, today, Sunday,
April 4, at 2:30 p.m.
