Xmas charities meet needs THE NORTH Shore Christmas fundraising drives have been so successful that both the North and West Vancouver charities have been able to donate leftover food to local food banks. By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter Together the North Vancouver Christmas Bureau and the West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund served 905 requests for food vouchers and food hampers from families and individuals over the tecent holiday season. Donations of non-perishable food left from last Christmas have been donated to the North Shore and Vancouver food banks and the Salvation Army. Christmas bureau coordinator Pat Orr said 675 families were served with 283 hampers and 392 vouchers. At the Toy Shop, a staggering number of children were served this season: 1,222 kids received up Sp oar to a maximum of four toys which their parents bought with dona- tions at the Toy Shop. In 1989 the Christmas bureau served 656 families with 250 food hampers, 406 food vouchers and 856 toys. ‘‘The donations were excellent. The food came in late but we made it all just fine,’’ said Pat Orr, who is stepping down after three years as the bureau coor- dinator. According to Orr’s estimates, volunteers based at the bureau of- fice put in 296 hours in addition to the 186 volunteer hours put in- to making up the hampers. Meanwhile, the volunteers at the Toy Shop, led by Elnore Dom- phousse and Gayle Melenka, put in 476 volunteer hours ‘‘easily,’’ said Orr. Although the final figure for money raised for the Christmas Bureau is not yet available, after bureau bills are paid and money is set aside for next Christmas, the remainder of the money will be used by the North Shore Family Services Society to help families in crisis. In West Vancouver, hampers and vouchers delivered to families and children received toys. In 250 families were served. The West Vancouver Santa Claus Fund was able to meet all requests for help, said executive officer Ruth Stout. She added that donations were “‘very, very good. We had food left over which we disributed with the food banks. During the snow when the food banks over town couldn’t get here, they drew on us,”’ she said. 230 were i81 1989, Stout estimates that the fund raised $30,000 which will go towards bills and start-up costs for next Christmas as well as to the North Shore Cooperative Pro- ject Society to assist iow-income residents throughout the year.
