say it is a deadly serious role.

The humor, hawever, springs
naturally out of the characters.
When he says to an obstinate doc-
tor, “If you were right, I'd agree
with you.” it isn’t a quip, it’s just a
surprise from such a self-effacing,
timid person. While verbally
limited, Williams’ eyes convey vast
compassion for the patient who
becomes a friend.

Robert De Niro once again
delivers a great performance that
has already received a couple of
awards. Watching his genial, life-
loving man unfold and battle the
drug’s limitations is painful, uplis-
ting and the stuff Oscars are made
of.

While the movie has brief

down humor

lapses, director Penny Marshall
(Big) avoids manutactured emo-
tions. Like Randy Newman's
score, scenes are understated and
plaintive. It’s funny, tender and it
works.
