Sunday, September 2, 1990 - North Shore News - 35 BONNIE PYPLACZ: ‘‘Beam me up Scottie” is one thing this self admitted closet Trekkie might be overheard saying while reading science fiction books. When your aging fridge finally quits, B.C. Hydro will rebate you $50 on the purchase of an energy- saving one. It’s a move that will save you cash. Up front. And down the road, with significant savings on your monthly electric bill. (Statis- tics shew that the new energy- saving models can represent a typical saving of $300 or more over the life of the fridge compared to less efficient models.) AFFLUENCE & INFLUENCE In her own words Why did you take on this job?: ‘*] worked in a simi- lar position out in the Fraser Valley. The job was in- side and detailed a lot of paper work. | was looking for something more that would aliow me to get in- volved in the community. When you work in a small town that has limited economic resources, that can be pretty draining.”’ What do you think you would be doing if you were not in this line of work?: “I think I’d probably be doing something in sales or marketing.”” What is a rouiine day like for you?: *‘We spend a lot of time on the phone. So much of our work is based on people who need services and we're always responding to requests for information. So when we plan a project, we have to plan it well in advance to make sure we have the time to spend on it.”’ What do you do to relax when away from the job?: “T bicycle. I have a mountain bike and I go back and forth along the SkyTrain route to the Westminster Quay.’’ What do you like to read?: ‘‘Science fiction...I’m a clasct Trekkie. I’m a very compulsive person. When I pick up a book, | have to read it all right there.” What about movies?: ‘‘The original Wizard of Oz is my favorite mnovie.”’ From page 34 serves three different municipalities rather than just one. And, while that can place an extra workload on the NSEDC's staff, Pyplacz says it also provides the NSEDC with an advantage over other economic development Offices in that its office is not located inside a municipal hall. **We're located outside of the city and district halls, whereas most other offices are not. That allows us to be perceived at wrist’s length from the municipal halls,” says Pyplacz. ‘‘lt allows people to feel free to come into us to talk about issues that are related to municipal government.’* While most of her time is taken up on the phone, Pyplacz says she and her staff try to work on as many ‘‘special projects’* as possi- ble. Two projects, which are almost complete, include preparations to profile the North Shore in the up- coming Business Opportunities On Your Door Step conference slated to be held Sept. 22 at the North NEWS photo Mike Wakefield Vancouver campus of the Cana- dian international College, and preparing statistical profiles of the three North Shore municipalities. A third project concerns the possibility of sending BC Rail’s Royal Hudson tv a transportation show in California next year. Pyplacz says she and her staff are interested in attaching a rail car to the Royal Hudson, which would include materials aimed at profiling the North Shore. Pyplacz says the NSEDC uses one criterion when deciding to take on a new project: It has to be fun. “*We don’t take ona lot of pro- jects unless we feel it is going to be a fun thine to do. When we New economic projects have to be fun did our Globe '90 booth, we got a lot of invitations to (government) minister's parties and private suite parties, and we also did fun things of our own with the North Shore businesses that went in on Globe *90 with us,’’ says Pyplacz, who adds that it is harder to find peo- ple to devote their time to special projects than it is to convince people to donate money to pro- jects. So just how long does Pyplacz plan to stay on as the NSEDC’s economic development officer? “7 plan to stay in this job for a while. ..1 haven’t found exactly what f want to do when I grow up.”* YS ated WITH BCAA “TRAVEL BCAA Travel presents PRINCESS CRUISES (32 We cordially invite you to attend our GALA CRUISE NIGHT for BCAA Special Group Departure to Hawaii and French Polynesia aboard the Plus, your purchase will help LOVE BOAT WHEN: Wednesday, Sept. 12, 1990 at 7:30 p.m. I ENERGY-SAVING FRIDGE | $50 REBATE REMINDER | Clipand save this reminder | task your appliance dealer $40 WHERE: Park Royal Hotel Clyde Ave., West Vancouver, B.C.
