HE'S GOT the rhythm in his head. Mambo. Samba.
Flamenco. Bossa nova. North African folk. Ace Brazilian
percussionist and guitarist Celso Machado is in town for the

next few months to play the du Maurier jazz Festival, the

Vancouver Folk Music Festival and ta lead local Brazilian
guitar and percussion workshops.”

He’s brought with him a room
full of drums ard a bag full of
whistles and rattles and bamboo
flutes — rain forest ambience-to-

go.
And when he plucks lightening

__ cascades of notes from his guitar

and then does the trick of turning
the instrument into some kind of
elemental Latino beat box, with
strings stretched beyond. all possi-
ble intended form and function,
well it just feaves you slack-jawed.
and awash in wonderment.

He showed equal parts percus-

sive and melodic dazzle, opening

for the brilliant Brazilian jazz ex-
ponents Flora Purim and Airto -
Saturday at the Commodore.

Said Machado during a pre-
festival interview, “I've decided
to.use more of this other side: of
my life, using more percussion. |
like very much this Brazilian per-
cussion: { try to use percussion in-
struments from different countries
—. Arabic, ‘African.-For me, it’s
very. important to use natural,
sourids and to use the body.”

The 36-year-old musician was
born into a musical family in
Ribeirao Preto near Sao Paulo,

’ Brazil. “My father is a musician

and J have five brothers who are
professional musicians. 1 started to

” play guitar, on a small guitar,

when § was 10 years old. My.
brothers were fighting one day at
home. t was sitting in the street

. with my friends and | saw a small

started to study classical: guitar,’’

A published composer,
Machado spends most of his time
teaching Brazilian and classical
guitar technique in Merignac
Bordeaux, at the International
Seminars for Guitar, and in Paris.
When he’s not teaching, he tours..
