Seniors meeting scheduled

A TASK force meeting for seniors
has been scheduled today at Rec-
Centre Lonsdale’s Capilano
Room, 123 East 23rd St., starting
at 1:30 p.m.

The task force, Toward a Better
Age, is currently collecting infor-
mation on a broad range of issues
relevant to seniors, including

health, finance, housing, transpor-
tation and personal security.

Public input gathered by the
four-member task force will be us-
ed by Minister Responsibie for
Seniors Peter Dueck io develop a
policy and programs for seniors
now and in the future.

Grouse Wiountain sewage leak
poses no threat, say

RAW SEWAGE seeping from a
Grouse Mountain sewer pipe has
raised the noses and ire of some
area residents and hikers, but
health officials say the leak does
not present a major public health
hazard

Carl Ruemke said the pipe leaks
regularly ‘‘just about every year.”’

The pipe connects the Grouse ski
area to the Greater Vancouver
Regional District sewage system
and follows the old Grouse Moun-
tain chairlift at the top of Skyline
Road.

The pipe, which has some clay
sections that are exposed on its
route down the mountzin, is vul-
nerable to breakage from such
things as vandalism and falling
rocks.

Ruemke also complained about
the length of time it took for
repairs to be done to the pipe.

But the North Shore’s chief
public health inspector Bill Kim-
mett said leaks in the pipe are not

usually visible until heavy snow
packs melt in the spring.

He said repairs are usually per-
formed on the pipe as soon as
damage reports are received.

‘It’s not caused by bad
management or anything like
that,’’ Kimmett said. ‘‘It’s one of
the facts of life of living in a rocky
area. The pipe is exposed in certain
areas because of the terrain.”’

He added that the area is rela-
tively isolated and used primarily
by hikers.
