Most people, being of sound mind, wouldn’t be in that position except for the cross-country skiing mania. Looking for ‘‘virgin’? snow and new trails lures many other- wise sane individuals into terrain that’s downright inhospitable. The sad thing is that so many go out compietely unprepared for any sort of breakdown. It gets mighty celd marooned in a snowbank. It also gets mighty cold if you’re stuck on a main hi hway! . One night, returning from Bell- ingham, four of us were stranded, along with hundreds of others, in the middie of Highway 99. TI was hardly dressed for the oc- casion — skirt, high heels and a light jacket. Our major problem was that we didn’t have a full tank of gas so didn’t dare run the engine for long enough to keep the car warm. : So, the first rule of winter driv- ing ought to be: Keep your gas tak full. I shouldn't have to say this, but, if you're off the road in a snowbank, be.sure your exhaust system is clear before running your engine -—- carbon monoxide poisoning is an unsightly way to ie. Even if we were low on gas, we'd have been a Iot more comfor- table had we been properly dress- I'd have paid a month’s salary for a pair of warm boots after a couple of hours in a freezing car. Heaven, too, could have been described as a couple of blankets. How many drivers have the foresight to keep a couple in their trunk when driving in winter?
