30 - Friday, September 16, 1988 - North Shore News Emperor, Moonstruck out on video THE LAST emperor of China was a lost emperor. His name was Pu Yi and, at the age of three, he ruled half of the earth’s population and was crowned Lord of 10,000 Years. Wrenched from his family and isolated from the outside world, he is kept pampered in the lavish Forbidden City where he grows to adulthood without leaving infancy. Pu Yi has no real power, he’s just a figurehead, a meal ticket for the 2,000 or so inhabitants of the City. Fortunately, a Scottish tutor, R.J. (Peter O'Toole) arrives to give the teenager a friendly hand. Through his efforts, Pu Yi begins to obtain some independence and, more importantly, gains knowledge of the turmoil that has overtaken his country. But his upbringing has condi- tioned him to be the perfect pris- oner. He submits to an arranged marriage and only steps beyond the walls when invaders force him to, After dabbling as a decadent playboy, he collaborates with the Japanese to gain his throne back and effect some changes. Once again, he finds himself a trapped pawn as the Japanese use him to gain a foothold over Asia. With the end of the Second - World War, Pu Yi returns to his familiar role as he is imprisoned for treason by the Communist regime. Only through their tireless efforts does this pathetic ruler find some contentment and freedom in the autumn of his life. Bernardo Bertolucci’s film swept most of the Oscars in the major categories, and it is a technical triumph. It’s a long film, but it does hold our interest with several unforget- table scenes. We will work with the concept of the ‘child within’ in order to ease into concentrated creative activity. Without a bank of self-images to live up to, the archetypal child can totally engage experience. In this workshop I ask individuals to permit themselves to play with the camera and to respond openly. uring the follow-up critique, individuals will explore their cwn images in order to give form to his/her vision: to create single image works, sequences, bookworks, collages, etc. Emphasis z in the critique will be on ways in which each participant offers and gains access to his/her own images and the images of others. his workshop is for beginning to advanced photographers. Knowledge of one’s own camera equipment is a prerequisite. Beginners are advised to work with color print film (daylight) and more advanced studenis can work in whatever film medium they wish, providing they can have images ready for the critique.
