When North Vancouver RCMP, North Vancouver Unit Provin- cial Ambulance Services paramedics and North Vancouver City Fire Department crews arrived just after 5:30 p.m., they found Skylor Nelson O'Brien crushed between an elevator and a shaft. The elevator had stopped between the first and second floors of the hotel. O’Brien was playing in the hotel lobby while waiting for his fa- ther who was staying at the hotel. He had squeezed in between a coliapsible door and the outer door of the elevator, As the elevator began to move, O’Brien was crushed. Rescuers had difficulty removing the victim and tad to cat through a door beam to extricate him. He was pronounced dead on arrival at LGH. Police are treating the incident as accidental and are continuing their investigation. IRCMP investigate| suspicious fires NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP are investigating two fires which occurred at the House of Fortune cestaurant on Capilune Road earlier this month. " Police believe the fires were set deliberately. North Vancouver District Fire Department firefighters responded to the first fire just before 9 p.m. March 12. The restaurant sustained minimal exterior damage. ae Firefighters responded again March 16 at -11:30 p.m. In- -vestigators‘found evideace of arson with the presence of a flam- mable material. The fire was again contained. Thus far no decision has been made on the ski mountain's future, but offers for its ski operations have been received from such interested parties as‘ Whistler rival Blackcomb Ski Enterprises. A spokesman for the mouniain has said the corporation needs cash, and that questions about. Man paid for attack injuries A 27-YEAR-old North Vancouver man was recently awarded $1,140 under the Criminal Injury. Compensation Act for injuries sustained when he was attacked without warning by an intoxicated male assailant and repeatedly punched in the face. The victim suffered multiple tacerations to his face. The award was one of 248 awards made during February under the act. Under the act anyone who is a victim of crime in B.C, may apply for and receive compensation, bring an action against a person or persons or do both. Application forms are available at any office of the Workers’ Compensation Board which administers the act. Shore’s three municipalities have risen slightly in L9K8 aver 1987, Figures released recently show the unconditional grant portion of the entitements, which are the means by which the province distributes its revenue to municipalities, rose from $1,347,841 in $987 s0 $1,356,572 in 1988 in North Vancouver City and from $1,459,796 to $1,497,652 over the same period in West Van- couver. The allotment for North Van- couver District. dropped. slightly from $2,570,125 in 1987 to $2,561,959 in 1988. Unconditional grants are pro- vided to municipalities for use as they see fit. The basic grant portion of the entitlements are used by provincial municipalities for administration costs and provide for funding be- tween a minimum of $40,000 and a maximum of $80,000.
