The aim of these villages is to develop a lifestyle in which people who are mentally handicapped and other villagers can actively con- tribute. The first community was established in 1939 and the move- ment now includes about 70 villages, which are home to about 2,000 people in Europe, the United Kingdom, Africa and the United States. Villages feature community liv- ing, farms and workshops, and a lively social and cultural life. Schools are also a part of the movement. In North Vancouer, the Ita Wegman school ha: been operating for about two years aiid has five students. The teaching is based on the philosopy of Rudolf Steiner, Austrian humanitarian and educator. Those interested in learning more about the Camphill move- ment and the proposed village may attend a meeting at St. David’s Church, Taylor Way at the Upper Levels, on Wednesday, June 10, at 8 p.m. For further information or if you are interested but cannot at- tend the meeting, phone Martha Barker at 986-6309 evenings and weekends or Satgit Aldana at 734-4840.
