A NEW voluntary testing and cer- tification program, aimed at im- proving the quality of eye and face protectors used by industrial workers, has been launched by Canadian Standards Association. Fifteen eye and face protector manufacturers have received cer- tification of their products to the requirements of CSA’s standard ‘Industrial Eye and Face Protec- tors’. The certification program — the first of its kind in Canada — tests eye and face protectors used in in- dustrial operations involving hazards to the eye or face. The program, which applies only to protectors with plano (non- ‘prescription) lenses, tests spec- tacles, with or without side shields, goggles, welding helmets, hand shields and face shields. CSA’s ‘Industrial Eye and Face Protectors’ standard contains a list of hazardous activities in the workplace and the recommended class of protectors that should be used. The hazards listed include flying objects and particles, acid splash and chemical burns, splash from molten metals, and abrasive blasting, such as sand blasting. As part of CSA’s testing for cer- tification, industrial eye protectors must withstand the impact of a 6.5 mm (%4"’) steel ball moving at speeds of either 14 metres per se- cond or 46.5 metres per second, depending on the protector’s level of impact resistance. Mechanical tests are also per- formed to determine the flam- mability or burning rate of any plastic parts and the effect of heat on the protector.
