THE NORTH Shore Senior Hockey League began its fifth season on Sept. 28 with three games at the North Vancouver Recreation Centre. Defence was the key in the first game, as the Firefighters and Old Crows skated to a 1-1 tie. Ken Francis gave the Firefighters an early lead with a pretty short- handed goal on a fine individual effort. But Wayne Wallace tied it early in the second period when he blasted a long shot past Firefighter goaltender John Phillipson. The Canadians picked up where they left off last year, as last year’s league champions outlasted the Drillers 5-3 in a spirited contest. Owen Jones scored the only goal of the first period to give Cana- dians the lead. The offence took over in the se- cond period as five goals were scored in five minutes. Brian Wallace tied the game when he tipped in a shot from the point. Don Ehi converted Jones’s goal-mouth pass to restore Cana- dians’ lead, but Larry Brown pick- ed up a loose puck at centre ice and went in to beat Canadians’ goalie John Davidson with a shot to the top corner. Ed Holt gave Drillers the lead‘ for the first time in the game with ae from a goal-mouth scram- le. But the Canadians struck back quickly, with Eh! deflecting Jim Maurer’s point shot past Keith Gibson. Then quick goals by Rick Poli- qnin and Maurer gave the Cana- cians the two-goal margin they heid till the end of the game. The Old Buzzards, meanwhile, defeated the Warriors 5-2. All the game's scoring come in the second period. The Buzzards’ line of Val Donovan, Aimie Lehouillier, and Doug Ireland led the attack, with Donovan netting two goals and the others scoring one each. Donovan’s goals came in the first minute of the second period, and Lehouillier scored a few minutes later after Ken Begg had tallied for the Warriors. Colin Campbell brought War- riors within one goal late in the game, but goals by Ireland and Howie Carty put the game out of reach. The league is using a two-period, stop-time format this season in place of last year’s three-period, Straight-time format, with only the last five minutesof the game stoptime.
